The significance of Stanisław Cukier’s work
Stanisław Cukier – Polish sculptor, born on 11 February 1954 in Zakopane, director of the Antoni Kenar School of Fine Arts in Zakopane (1994–2019). He comes from the Cukier family from Podhale. Graduate of the A. Kenar State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Zakopane (1976). In 1976–1981, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He graduated with honours from Prof. Zofia Demkowska’s studio (1981). After graduation, he worked for several years as a lecturer at the Warsaw Academy in the Casting Technique Studio. In 1991, he became a teacher, and from 1994 to 2019, he was the director of the Kenar Secondary School of Fine Arts in Zakopane. The artist’s works can be found in the collections of the National Museum in Wrocław, the National Museum in Krakow, the National Museum in Warsaw and the British Museum in London, among others.
The artist’s oeuvre includes sculptures, plaques, medals, reliefs and documentation related to the creative process (models, photographs, sketches). His works are characterised by high artistic value, confirmed by numerous awards, including the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis (2016). The significance of Cukier’s work stems from its consistency, exceptional craftsmanship and the role it has played in the development of contemporary sculpture. The artist represents a trend combining academic tradition with formal explorations characteristic of the art of the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. His works constitute research material of great source value for the history of art, museology and studies on figuration in the contemporary world.
